Jack the MP3 Ripper - Ripping CD's

Ripping CD's

This chapter explains how to rip CD's using Jack the MP3 Ripper.

Jack the MP3 Ripper - Before Starting

If you are accessing the internet via a proxy server, first make sure that the proxy address and port settings are entered correctly in Preferences. If you have a direct connection to the internet, you can leave the proxy address blank, otherwise if the correct address is not specified, Jack the MP3 Ripper will not be able to connect to the CDDB Database. Your ISP will inform you whether you need to access the Internet via a proxy.

Jack the MP3 Ripper - Ripping a CD

To rip a CD, follow these steps:

  1. Load the CD into the CD-ROM drive. Jack should automatically detect the music CD. If several CD-ROM drives are present, select the correct CD-ROM drive from the CD drop down menu. To update the CD contents, click the Refresh CD button.

  2. If the CD has a record in the CDDB (Online CD database) Jack will automatically retrieve the title, artist and track names of the CD. To edit a track name, right click the track name and select Rename from the pop up menu.

  3. Select where the output (ripped tracks) should be stored. Click the ... button to browse for a location.

  4. Select the format of the output. Currently the options available are MP3 encoded by LAME_ENC, MP3 encoded by BLADEENC or WAV. Select the desired format from the Format drop down menu.

  5. Select the desired bit rate from the Rate drop down menu. The larger the number, the better the quality of the output. However the file sizes are much larger when using a high bit rate.

  6. To rip all tracks, click the RIP button. To rip selected tracks, highlight the tracks to rip by holding down the shift key while clicking on the tracks. Click the RIP button when the desired tracks have been selected.

  7. A status window will display the ripping progress.

When the window disappears, the tracks have been successfully ripped, and will be displayed in the destination file browser.
